If you crack your cell phone screen, you have one of two options: one of those “repair” stores in the mall, or more commonly, buy a replacement. One is expensive and the other voids your warranty and is…questionable. Right to Repair laws seek to (ahem) fix that problem.
Here’s Five Fast Facts on Right to Repair Laws:
- 📱 It’s My Right - Right to Repair legislation is supposed to make it easier and cheaper for you to fix your electronic products by requiring manufacturers to share information, diagnostic tools and supply parts. No more shady mall kiosks!
- 💻 Second Place - Similar laws have been passed all over the globe. For example, European law says manufacturers are required to supply spare parts for a specific product for up to 10 years.
- 💸Super Savings - Supporters say that replacing damaged products (including TVs, computers and other electronics) costs us billions. A recent survey found that, on average, each household spent $1,767 on electronics in 2021. That’s up 19% since 2021!!!
- 💰 Paying the Price - The drawback, of course, is money. If manufacturers are forced to comply, they can simply raise prices to cover the losses they might otherwise incur.
- 🚜 States’ Rights - Nearly 30 states have enacted some form of right to repair laws already. Colorado even has a law that requires manufacturers to provide farmers with the tools, manuals and software necessary to fix their tractors.
🔥Bottom line: Imagine how much you’d save if your nephew cracked your phone screen when he decided to throw it at the wall to “see what happens.” Or how quickly you’d get it back because it didn’t have to be sent back to the manufacturer. Right to Repair puts the power in the consumer’s hands whether big business likes it or not. After all, you bought it, so it belongs to you, not them.
