Two bills that many of our readers would no doubt support were just vetoed by Gov. Evers. Both wanted to stop local governments from banning gas stoves and gas-powered cars. You read that right!
Here’s Five Fast Facts on Gov. Evers’ Renewable Energy Veto:
- 🖋️ Two Down - Evers recently vetoed two bills from two separate communities. The laws were trying to prevent any future bans on fossil-fueled cars or gas stoves. They were basically preventing a ban that doesn’t exist (yet).
- 🤯 Confusing - Republican lawmakers said the bills would have protected consumer choice, even though some say the same laws would eliminate choice for renewable energy products. Lawmaker logic is fun!
- 👁️ In Your Business - Evers noted his veto was decided in part because he feels state lawmakers should not micromanage the state’s cities or counties. Plus, he feared how the bans would impact efforts to fight “climate change.”
- 🔌 Big Backer - WEC Energy Group, which owns two of the state’s largest utilities, heavily supported the proposed bans. Which makes sense because they buy/sell lots of natural gas and energy. Also, WEC plans to drastically raise heating bills this winter and raise rates completely next year. So they have a vested interest in blocking renewable/alternative energy sources.
- ⛔Banned in the USA - The state of Wisconsin hasn’t proposed any sort of ban on vehicles, appliances, or energy use. But, Evers does have a clean energy plan encouraging incentives to buy electric appliances and supports the expansion of electric vehicle instruction.
🔥Bottom line: We say this often: how you feel about this issue comes down to where you stand on the political spectrum and what cable news network you watch. We’re not advocating for or against “green” energy. But we can advocate for low utility rates. So when WEC, one of the biggest bandits in the state, backs any kind of energy plan, you have to wonder who they’re really in it for. Hint: it’s probably not you.
