Wisconsin, We (May) Have a Buyer

Some of that empty Foxconn land could finally see some use and bring in some revenue in the form of a new Microsoft data center.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on Microsoft’s New Project:

  1. 🖥️ From the Ashes - Microsoft wants to purchase 315 acres in Mount Pleasant for about $50M. It plans on investing around $1B in the project.
  2. 📀 Search Bar - Mount Pleasant has been actively working to find a company to use the land. The existing infrastructure for Foxconn makes the area very appealing.
  3. 💻 User Agreement - If Microsoft fails to meet deadlines, Mount Pleasant and Racine County can repurchase the land at the original per acre price. Proceeds from the sale would go to Foxconn as a partial reimbursement.
  4. 👍 Red Tape - The project was approved by Mount Pleasant on March 30. Racine County still needs to sign off. Construction would begin later this year.
  5. 👩‍💻 Jobs? - Microsoft hasn’t said how many jobs it will create, but data centers are just big buildings full of computers that don’t require many warm bodies. Only eight people work in a data center near Milwaukee.

🔥Bottom line: What’s the old saying? “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” Mount Pleasant needs to be really careful here or it could find itself even worse off than it did with the Foxconn deal. But if this deal does go through, we finally get rid of some of that Foxconn stink. It will also make it easier for Bill Gates to track you with the chips in the COVID vaccine (j/k).
