Now that cold weather is here, Wisconsin’s utility companies can’t cut off your heat. And that includes customers who are behind on their bills.
Here’s Five Fast Facts About Wisconsin’s Heat Moratorium:
- 🧊 Chill - The moratorium went into effect on November 1 and runs through April 15th.
- 🥶 Utilities are OK with this? - Surprisingly they are, but not for the reason you might think. Disconnecting a customer’s heat is expensive and labor intensive. It’s not that they don’t want you to freeze, they just don’t want to spend the money.
- ❄️Help Me Help You - Providers encourage struggling customers to work with them as much as possible during the moratorium. They’d rather you pay what you can rather than have massive debt in April that you can’t pay that would result in a disconnection.
- 🌨️ Outreach - Wisconsin also has a variety of aid programs that can help customers keep up with their bills, like the Keep Wisconsin Warm Fund.
- 🧤 That’s Just Cold - Utilities in violation of the moratorium should be reported ASAP.
🔥Bottom line: All signs point to it being a cold winter, which means some hefty heating bills. A moratorium like this is a good thing and it seems to also benefit everyone involved. After all, nobody wants Wisconsinites to freeze.
