Employers only like people with skills. 💼 You know, like nunchuck skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills. Gosh! 😆
If you’re a new grad hearing crickets after applying to entry-level jobs, don’t get down on yourself. Many companies are pulling back on hiring folks without experience. ❌🥴
But how will you get the experience without…a job? We’ve got a couple of ideas. 💡
Here’s Five Fast Facts on getting an entry level job:
- 👔 The New Guy - Data trends show that companies may be moving away from hiring newbies. According to a 2023 survey of human resources leaders, less than 61% of those surveyed said they’re hiring for entry-level positions. That’s down significantly from 79% reported in 2022.
- 🛑 Bad News Barriers - When it comes to applying for jobs, a 2022 report revealed the number two barrier to employment was a “lack of relevant skills and experience, education, or credentials.” The number one barrier was limited available jobs.
- 💻 Skills and Thrills - Recruiting experts say that employers have shifted more towards skills-based hiring. This means they’re paying less attention to college degrees and certifications and more towards whether or not you know how to do the job. Pro tip: seek out an internship opportunity before you graduate to build up those skills.
- 👎 I’ll Pass - Feeling like you’re getting passed over at work? It’s not just you. According to a 2023 survey, 42% of employees reported feeling left out of job opportunities because they didn’t have enough experience or qualifications.
- 🧠 Knowledge Is Power - Another way to build skills is to enroll in an online training program in your desired field. There are several low cost and even free options to check out all over the internet, like Grow with Google. Taking on freelance gigs in a new skill also helps you fill your resume with skills and experience to help you stand out.
🔥Bottom line: If you’re not into breaking your back for a meager paycheck (who is), you’re in luck. Good paying “anti-hustle” jobs are on the rise! If working in a cubicle next to the breakroom where Sharon from IT heats up her fish sticks doesn’t appeal to you, maybe set your sights on a skilled trade gig.
