Teacher retention continues to torment the state, with a surprising new statistic that shows off just how bad the situation is right now.
Here’s Five Fast Facts about Teacher Retention:
- 🧑🏫 Fraction - According to a report from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) almost 40% of Wisconsin public school teachers leave the profession within their first six years in the field.
- 🧮 Subtraction - The DPI points the finger at inadequate compensation and growing workloads as two of the main problems.
- 💵 Long Division - The report also says that educator pay has decreased 19% since 2010 when held constant in 2022 dollars. It’s led the DPI to plead with lawmakers to take action before the next school year.
- 📐 Decreasing Variable - The departure rate has left a strong need for educators in special education, math, career and technical education, science, and speech-language pathology.
- 📊 Zero Sum - There are some positive numbers, however. Enrollments in educator preparation programs in Wisconsin exceed those in the surrounding states and the retirement rate for educators is stable.
🔥Bottom line: These numbers indicate education in public schools is not a priority for our state government and it’s likely to remain that way. There’s no way to tell what will change that, but we’re certainly running out of time when it comes to making sure our kids are educated at the levels they need.
