Beef lovers, good news abounds! Sustainable Beef is a new beef processing facility driven by a coalition of ranchers to counter mass consolidation in the meat industry. And boy, are they doing some tasty things.
Here are Five Fast Facts about beef happenings in Nebraska:
- ⚒️ Where It Begins - Sustainable Beef just broke ground on its new $325 million facility in North Platte. It should begin operations in late 2024. Cue up the ‘cue!
- 🐄 Where It Goes - When finished, the new facility will be over 500k square feet, and capable of processing more than 1500 cattle per day. It should create 875 new jobs. That’s a lot of good new Paychecks!
- 💰 The Dollars - Construction funding includes $20 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and a partnership with Walmart. What isn’t funded by the ARPA nowadays…?
- 🇼 The Big W - Walmart will drive distribution of the beef from Nebraska across the country. In exchange for their equity in the facility, they’ll get representation on the board. They’re not masters of logistics for nothing.
- 💉 The Exchange - To get Walmart on board, Sustainable has committed to following the Antibiotics in Animals policy, which seeks animal health and wellbeing through minimal and careful treatment of diseases. Healthy cattle = great beef!
