Where does Michigan Rank On The Latest Best States List?

Every year we see various outlets offering different opinions about which states are the best to live in. Some of those look better for each state than others, it just depends on what they prioritize and how that matches with each state. The basic idea is to see how well each state serves its citizens in a number of different facets of life.

One recent list from US News isn’t looking great for us here in Michigan. We could ignore it, but taking a good, hard look at ourselves to see where we need to make some adjustments is probably needed.

Here are Five Fast Facts on Michigan’s state rank:

  1. 🧮 The Method - To get the rankings, US News looked at eight categories, each with a couple of subcategories and 71 metrics across those subcategories, spanning across all facets of life in that state. They weighted all of that based on three years of national surveys by 70,000 people. Math nerds really enjoyed the whole process!
  1. 🤦 Hit Me With It - Might as well just rip the Band-Aid off: Michigan was ranked #42. 😣
  1. 😞 Categorically Cringe-Worthy - Michigan’s rank in the eight categories are as follows: Crime (#38), Economy (#28), Education (#41), Fiscal Stability (#32), Health Care (#29), Infrastructure (#41), Natural Environment (#30), and Opportunity (#27). Woof, that’s some tough sledding there.
  1. 👍 Best Category - Our best category is Opportunity. The subcategories underneath that are Affordability (#22), Economic Opportunity (#35), and Equality (#25). Okay, those are some good wins…though are they actually wins if they’re only average?
  1. 🤷 High And Low - Looking across the board, our best performing subcategories are Health Care Access (#16) and Higher Education (#48). Yeesh. Gotta take the bad with the good, huh?

🔥Bottom line: So, yeah, this isn’t great. We report on this not to belittle ourselves, but rather to shed some light on the fact that we need better from our elected leaders. Fortunately for us, there’s an opportunity to say that very loudly coming up in just a couple weeks!
