When One Job Won’t Pay the Bills: The Growing Multi-Job Workforce

What’s your go-to playlist on the morning commute? 🎶🚗 A little heavy metal to get things going? Perhaps you’re more of a podcast person. Nothing like a little true crime mystery before solving the real mysteries in the office. 🕵️ Someone’s gotta catch the lunch stealing bandit.

More Americans than ever are working 9-to-5…and then some. 😵‍💫 Is this trend something we should be #concerned about, or is it all just a silly little phase? Join us while we break it all down. 👇

Here’s Five Fast Facts on multiple jobholders:

  1. 💼 Workaholics Anonymous - The latest job report revealed that 5.4% of all employed U.S. workers hold multiple jobs. That’s the highest level since April of 2009. How many Americans is that? Roughly 8.9 million, the most since we started tracking this metric back in 1994.
  1. 💸 Pick Up Game - Anyone with half an expensive egg knows times are tough. There are many reasons a single paycheck doesn’t stretch as far as it used to. We can thank inflation for sky high price increases. On top of that, Americans have more debt than ever and those monthly payments keep on keepin’ on.
  2. 🎓 No Guarantees - College degrees no longer come with the guarantee of a steady job when you graduate. Nowadays, it’s common for new grads to hold multiple jobs right off the bat. According to recent data, college grads make up roughly half the U.S. workforce, up 31% since 1994.
  1. 🧑‍💻 Virtual Insanity - The rise of gig work and side hustles has made it easier than ever for Americans to earn more income. Thanks to remote work and the internet, many full time workers come home from their day jobs and clock in for a night shift with a different company.
  1. 📈 Troubling Trend? - Should we be worried about this trend? Depends on who you ask. Fed Head Jerome Powell says everything’s in balance, but many Americans are a tad worried. Trump has also hinted at an incoming recession during what’s turning out to be *quite* the transition period for the country.

🔥Bottom line: To all the multiple jobholders out there: we see you and we salute you. Whether you’re looking to pick up an extra job or looking for a brand new main gig, the search struggle is real. If the job hunt’s making you a little insane, it’s not just you. In this article, we pick apart all the reasons why the job search sucks.
