What Pennsylvania Pays for Electricity

We’ve got chills. They’re multiplying. 🥶 But before we head to the thermostat, we’re gonna check our latest utility bill. Oh yeah, these rising costs are…electrifying. ⚡

Just how much are Pennsylvanians paying for electricity? 🤔 We’ve got the details (and a couple ways to save). 👇

Here’s Five Fast Facts on the price of electricity in PA:

  1. 😵 How Shocking - Are your utility bills higher than the audience at a Bob Marley tribute show? You’re not wrong. Between May 2020 and May 2024, the average electricity price in PA increased by almost 30% (from 14 to 18 cents per kilowatt-hour).
  1. 🔌 Quite a Buzz - How do PA’s electric bills stack up against the rest of the country? The average price of electricity in the United States in June 2024 was 16.41 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Electricity rates can vary greatly, depending on your state. Hawaii has the highest average rate at 42.45 cents per kWh. Louisiana has the lowest at 11.42 cents per kWh.
  1. 💵 Being Choosy - Although PA residents can’t choose their electric utility (who delivers power to their homes), they can choose their supplier. If you shop around, you might be able to get a better deal. Check out the PA PowerSwitch website to compare.
  1. 🏠 A Little Help - If you’re a low-income household, PA has several programs in place to help get energy bills paid. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, provides grants from $300 to $1,000 for low-income households to pay heating bills.
  1. 🌅 Here Comes the Sun - Interested in getting solar panels but don’t want to completely blow your budget? Through a solar lease or power purchase agreement, a solar installer puts the panels on your roof then sells you the energy they generate. Pricing is either at a fixed rate per kilowatt-hour or a flat monthly rate. If you own your own panels, you’re eligible for a 30% tax credit through the Inflation Reduction Act.

🔥Bottom line: Speaking of solar panels, if you’re thinking about getting them, you best do your research. A lot comes into play when figuring out if they’re a good investment for your household. Luckily, we’ve put together a guide just for you! Check it out here.
