What are Americans willing to spend a bit more for at the grocery store? A new study breaks down the numbers that show some interesting trends.
Here’s Five Fast Facts about America’s Grocery Habits:
- 🏪 Still Spending - According to the report, high prices aren’t slowing us down. We’re spending 4.8% more a week on food than this time last year.
- 🛒 How Much? - The data also shows that we’re spending about $119 more a week (on average) for groceries and $67 a week on restaurants and carryout than we did this time last year.
- 🥤 Drink Up - It looks like 2/3rds of consumers are willing to pay up to 30% more for name brand soft drinks than generic alternatives. Is Faygo a generic or a name brand? Somebody ask a Juggalo.
- 🍪 Nom Nom - When it comes to snacks, shoppers are more likely to go for the generic over the brand names, especially when a larger discount is involved. If your kids claim they can taste the difference between Hydrox and Oreos, you need to enroll them in college immediately because their brains operate on an entirely different level.
- 🥩 Meet and Greens - Shoppers also don’t care about name brands when it comes to fresh meat and veggies, saying that name brands have nothing to do with quality in this instance.
🔥Bottom line: You can complain about inflation all you want, but it doesn’t look like it’s stopping us from spending at the grocery store. It is interesting to see how inflation informs the decisions we make when we’re shopping.
