U-Haul Data Shows Ohio as a Top Place to Move

Got any Gen Alpha kids at home? 🤸 If so, you may have heard them throw the word “Ohio” around.  To them, if something's “Ohio,” it’s cringe or weird. We don’t have time to get into all the other Skibidi Rizz. 🤪

Kids may think Ohio is cringe but a lot of grown up people don’t! New U-Haul data shows the Buckeye State rose higher on a list of top states to call home. 🏘️

Here’s Five Fast Facts on Ohio as a top state to move to:

  1. 📦 Pack It Up - Wake up, babe. New U-Haul data just dropped and it ranked Ohio among the top 15 states to move to. Every year, U-Haul ranks states by growth using one-way trips to see where people are leaving and moving to. In 2024, Ohio rose up to 14th on the list. That’s a nine spot jump from its 2023 ranking of 23.
  1. 🚚 Get a Move On - Over the last seven years, Ohio has seen more one-way U-Haul arrivals than departures or at least broken even. In 2024, U-Haul data shows a 1.5% rise in arrivals and a 1% rise in departures overall. This year Ohio basically broke even with 50.2% of U-Haul one-way customers coming into Ohio and 49.8% moving out.
  1. 🏭 Good Company - Mega companies throughout Ohio are a major reason for growth in the Columbus metro region as well as Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Toledo. Kroger, Procter & Gamble, Nationwide and Progressive are just some of the corporations with an HQ in the Buckeye State. In Central Ohio’s Licking County, Intel’s new factories are also drawing folks in.
  1. 🧑‍🎓 Class In Session - Another reason for move-ins? Ohio’s top colleges and universities. Schools in cities like Cincinnati, Columbus and Akron see a ton of activity as students come to learn and teachers and staff seek employment.
  1. 📊 Big Picture - How’s the data look overall? Across the U.S. and Canada, there were more than 2.5 million one-way U-Haul rentals in 2024. Which state got the top spot? South Carolina. The state stole the number one slot from Texas.

🔥Bottom line:  You know what’s truly cringe and Ohio (in the Gen A sense)? The Midwest’s lag in wage increases compared to the rest of the country. What’s to blame? Head on over to this article where we spill the tea. Is it still cool to say that?
