One of the signs of true leadership and maturity is not just avoiding difficulties, but managing an organization through them successfully. A whole state is no exception. It appears we’re going to see just how successful and mature Michigan’s leadership is.
Here are Five Fast Facts on a tough jobs situation:
- 💄🐷 The Projection- The state recently put out a report of the job growth expected over the next seven years. In short, it’s not good. Oh, it looks good, with 8.8% total growth between 2020 and 2030…but that’s only because we’re just barely recovering all those jobs that were lost in the pandemic. Merely lipstick on a pig.
- 📉 The Causes - A big problem is Michigan’s population, or rather its lack of population. We’ve got the second worst population growth in the country, with birth rates dropping and death rates rising. More people leave every year than move in, and those who are here are getting older on average. This is NOT good for long term prospects, either economically or dating.
- 🤜🤛 The Efforts - Gov. Whitmer has launched several campaigns to turn the ship around, from advertising in more conservative states about the progressive policies here to investing in more (translation: free) education to increase local skill sets. There are also numerous programs to help companies go from a big fish in a little pond to a small fish in a much bigger lake. To be fair, some question whether these programs will actually work, so let the debates begin!
- 🗺️ Where To Go - Despite overall struggles, there are some areas that are doing well. There’s a ton of growth in Western Michigan, and even across the rest of the state there are pockets where things are looking up. You may need to move around a bit to find these good jobs, but they’re out there if you’re willing and able to go get them!
- 🐕🍺 What To Look For - In terms of what kind of jobs you can find, animal caretakers, bartenders, and construction workers are in especially high demand. If you can do any of these things, the numbers say you should have some advantages!
🔥Bottom line: Times are tough for a lot of folks, and everyone is feeling the pinch. Finding a good job is critical to being able to make the life you want, so we want to do everything we can to help! Good jobs are out there, and many of them come with really great Paychecks! You might have to think a little differently or do some things differently, but isn’t it worth a little pivoting for good results?
This will be a tough test for our state’s leaders as they navigate through these choppy waters. Let’s hope they’re up for it.
