Too Much Impulse Shopping? Slow It Down

Buying too much crap on Amazon? 📦 Going on one too many Target runs? 🎯 Do you really need that tie dyed pumpkin pillow and matching throw blanket? OK, maybe you do. 😏

According to a recent report on savings, 36% of American adults have more credit card debt than money in an emergency fund. 😱 Maybe it’s time we slowed things down. You know, be more mindful, more demure. 💅

Here’s Five Fast Facts on “slow shopping”:

  1. 🐢 Slow Your Roll - Slow shopping is all about being more mindful when it comes to making a purchase. Instead of impulsively buying, slow shoppers stop and think about the cost and necessity of an item before taking it home. They also wait for the best deals. Slow shopping helps lessen anxiety, promotes healthy spending habits, and reduces buyer’s remorse.
  1. ⌚ Buying Some Time - How do you shop slower online? Try adding things to your shopping cart then waiting at least 24 hours before pulling the trigger. This gives you time to research discounts and think about whether you really need the items. The same thinking applies to in-store shopping, too. If it’s a big ticket item, like electronics or furniture, check things out in a browsing-only visit, then come back once you’ve made your final decision.
  1. 🧘 Too Blessed for Stress - Slow shopping is great for your mental health. When you purchase less stuff you don’t need, your home is much less cluttered. You definitely don’t want to be on an episode of Hoarders. Unnecessary spending is stressful, too. Being more mindful keeps you more zen.
  1. 😵‍💫 Overcooked - While it’s mostly positive, there can be some drawbacks to slow shopping. If you overanalyze purchases, you might find yourself burned out and super drained. If you always hold out for the best deal, the best deal might pass you by.
  2. 🧠 Mindset Matters - If you’re not the best with money, don’t use slow shopping to punish yourself. Don’t use the approach unless you can do it with positivity. Get under the hood of your poor money habits and work to correct the urge to restrict and deprive yourself, or think of money with a scarcity mindset.

🔥Bottom line: Before you click that purchase button, take a deep breath and ask yourself if you really need it. Your paycheck will thank you. Hey, grocery prices are a real pain in the peanut these days, aren’t they? Try slashing your grocery bill with the tricks in this article!
