Tips For Handling Burnout

Burnout just plain sucks. 😣  There’s little worse than forcing yourself to get up and go to work when you’re experiencing burnout - exhaustion, stress, and a complete lack of motivation. It just doesn’t go well, and both your work and your relationships suffer when you’re experiencing it.

A recent survey showed two-thirds of American workers feel “disengaged” at work, and over half are currently looking at getting a new job. Given that the cost of replacing workers ranges from 30-200% of the worker’s salary, it’s good for employers to avoid burnout, too!

Most of us struggle with it at some point or another, so let’s look at some tips on how to handle it through intentional work design (whether for yourself or your people)!

Here are Five Fast Facts on handling burnout in a way that’s very SMART:

  1. 💡 Stimulating Work - Find ways to do work that includes variety, challenge, and things that are interesting. Not only does this engage you better, but it provides opportunities for career development, as well. Building your career and a future tends to keep burnout away.
  1. 🏆 Mastery - Not only does mastery mean the work gets done better, but it gives the worker a load of confidence. It also helps people understand how they fit into the bigger picture of the organization and its mission, and that kind of belonging is like a wooden stake to the vampire of burnout.
  1. 😁 Autonomy - Micromanagement sucks just as much as burnout. Avoid it like the plague! If you’ve got a work environment where autonomy is standard procedure, workers are likely to be happier and more productive, and less likely to feel burnout.
  1. 🤝 Relational Work - People need to connect, and teams do better when they’re all working toward a common goal. Tap into this vibe to tighten the bonds of your workplace, and loosen the grip of burnout.
  1. 👍 Tolerable Demands - We don’t get up and “go to fun” every day, so by definition there’s going to be some tough stuff that we don’t like to do. Along with that comes some demands, but if they are reasonable then it doesn’t push workers over the edge into burnout.

🔥Bottom line: Every situation is unique, but follow these tips to help lessen the effects of burnout for you and your team. That’ll lead to better results and happier people!
