Don't forget to tip your bartender! 🍸And your server! 🍔 And your…barista, your dog groomer, your mom's dog groomer's groomer…why does this list keep growing? 😵💫☕🐶 It seems like there's a Tipping Tablet ™ at every register these days and we're all feeling the burn(out).
Tip culture's changed a bit over the last several years and we're keeping the pulse. 🩺
Here’s Five Fast Facts on the current state of tipping in America:
- 📈 Tipping Talk - A recent study found total tips received in Winter 2022 increased 16.5% year-over-year at full-service restaurants and nearly 16% at quick-service restaurants. However, other data shows 17% of Americans are tipping less overall due to inflation.
- 🤑 Tablet Habits - In another study, 73% of folks reported leaving a tip at least 11% higher when they tip digitally compared to when they use cash. Unlike a tip jar or throwing some extra cash in a restaurant bill, digital tipping often requires customers to click yes or no before payment. This tends to hit customers right in the feels, creating some moral obligation vibes.
- 💵 The Kids Are Generous - Folks 59 and older were the most likely to report that they always tip. However, younger respondents (ages 27 to 42) were the most likely of any age group to report tipping more than 25%.
- 🧮 Big Brother Strikes Again - With all this extra tipping floating around, of course the IRS wants a piece. The IRS proposed a new voluntary tip reporting program which could result in increased tax liability for service workers. The program aims to reduce the estimated $1.66 billion in annual unreported tip income.
- 💡 Tipping Tips - Got a case of tip confusion? Here's what a tipping etiquette expert has to say: when you encounter a cash register tip jar, putting money in it is completely optional. For personal services, like getting your hair or nails done, the usual tip is between 15% and 20%. When you're out to eat, it's expected you tip your server at least 15%.
🔥Bottom line: Even though it's getting easier to tip, the choice to do so is always up to you. While the Tipping Tablets™ are everywhere you look, don't be peer-pressured into blowing your budget. Yes, you should always tip when it's appropriate, especially when you had a fantastic meal or massage. However, your mom's dog groomer's barista's barber could probably do just fine without your extra pennies in the tip jar. 😆
