Time To Leave Work…To Go To (Other) Work

Imagine trying to juggle flaming swords while riding a unicycle—that’s basically what millions of Americans are doing by working multiple jobs. With inflation rising faster than your grandma’s bread dough, people are hustling to make ends meet.

Here are Five Fast Facts about multiple jobs:

  1. 🤯 Record High - About 5.4% of the workforce is now working multiple jobs, the highest percentage since 2009. There are more Americans working multiple jobs now than at any time since tracking began in 1994.
  1. 🚌 Driving The Ugly Bus - One of the main drivers of the need for second (or third) jobs is that college degrees are no longer a strong indicator of landing a high-paying job. So strange that a Humanities degree in Saharan African Illiterate Tribal Literature doesn’t land you a six-figure salary, huh?
  1. 🎩 The “I” Word - The other big driver of multiple jobs is years of inflation driving up the cost of everything. Inflation has made real money feel like Monopoly money, but we unfortunately don’t get $200 just for passing Go.
  1. 💵 Do The Hustle - Side hustles like Uber and DoorDash are keeping many afloat. But it’s not just extra spending money, it’s food-on-the-table necessity money.
  1. 👍 Gig This - The good news is that today’s technology and remote work environment is making it easier than ever to find and hold down good paying side jobs.

🔥Bottom line: For many Americans, one job just isn’t enough anymore. While it’s great that second (or third) jobs are easier to find and hold than ever before, it still suggests that things in our economy are way out of balance.
