Time for a Raise? PA House Just Passed $15 Minimum Wage Bill

It's been 14 whole years since Pennsylvania experienced a minimum wage increase, and they're finally knocking the cobwebs off this thing! 🕸️🧽

A new bill hit lawmakers' desks this week to raise the Keystone state's minimum wage to $15. 💵 PA's Democratic-controlled House of Representatives approved the bill by a close vote this past Tuesday.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on PA's minimum wage bill:

  1. 🧓 A Long, Long Time Ago - PA's current minimum wage is the same as the federal minimum of $7.25. The last time it increased was in 2009.
  1. 🪜 Step By Step - The new bill proposes a gradual increase of the state's minimum wage over the next few years. It'll change from $7.25 to $11 in 2024, move up to $13 in 2025, and finally settle in at $15 in 2026.
  1. 🌭 Just the Tip - If passed, the bill would also increase the tipped workers' wage to $9.00 an hour. That's a significant increase from the current rate of $2.83 an hour.
  1. 🫡 Follow the Leader - A total of 30 other states plus Washington, D.C. have raised their minimum wages above the federal minimum, including all of PA's neighbor states.
  1. 🤏 Close Call - The bill passed 103 to 100 with all but one Democrat's approval and two Republicans saying "yay". It now moves to the state's Republican controlled Senate.

🔥Bottom line: Each side of the aisle has their own strong opinions on the minimum wage hike. 🧐 PA Dems think 14 years since the last raise is super-overdue and some believe $15 is still too low. Republicans worry the wage increase will be another blow to small businesses, many of which are still struggling to recover from the pandemic. We'll keep the pulse on how things shake out after the bill heads to the Senate.
