Money is no laughing matter. 🤐 That’s right, from now on, we’re done posting memes, joking about high prices, and we’re shutting down the economy chuckle machine. Did we mention it’s Opposite Day? 🙃🤣

Depending on where you call home, the cost of living could really put a hurtin’ on your bank account. 👛🪰 We’ve rounded up some interesting stats on the states where Americans just say no to financial funny business!

 

Here’s Five Fast Facts on serious money states:

  1. 💸 The Hit List - Some states are just expensive AF. According to recent data from the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center, these five states currently have the highest cost of living: Hawaii, California, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, and Alaska.
  1. 🧑‍💻 Searchin’ for Sunshine - Say what you want about the Sunshine State, but their citizens are super money savvy. According to a recent study, California residents checked Google for financial planning insights over 300,000 times over the past few months (more than any other state).
  2. 🍎 A Big Apple a Day - Surprised New York wasn’t in the top five most expensive states? Us, too. However, New Yorkers search for financial planning terms just as much as Californians. NOT surprisingly, New Yorkers also have the highest average salary out of all states. They also save an average of $1,144 per month.
  1. 🤠 Cowboys & Crocodiles - Texas and Florida each have a fairly low cost of living. Their residents are money mavens, too, searching the internet for financial tips up to 200,000 times over the last few months. Each Texas resident saves around $962 per month and Floridians save around $828. 
  1. 🏜️ (New) Mexican Radio - Which state’s residents spend the least on monthly expenses? New Mexico. Even though they have a low average monthly salary, New Mexicans save an average of $832 per month.  

🔥Bottom line: No matter where you live, taking money matters seriously is always a good choice. Getting on a proper budget and sticking to it goes a long way.
