With the rise of streaming entertainment, physical media is starting to fade into the background, leaving many of us with piles and piles (and piles and piles) of unused CDs and DVDs that you probably won’t use again. So why not make some cash from them instead and sell them?
Here’s Five Fast Facts on Selling DVDs and CDs:
- 📱 Apps - Media has gone digital, but the selling process has, too. There are quite a few apps that make the process a snap. Most will have you enter the barcode number, ISBN or product name, or – if they’re really high tech — scan with your phone for an instant quote.
- 💻 Ebay - Ebay is a reliable option, especially if you have some in-demand collectors’ editions or long out-of-print titles. Getting everything listed can be a time-consuming process, but with the right items, it could be well worth the effort.
- 💿 Used Media Stores - Places like Half Price Books, VStock and other used media stores are always willing to take your CDs and DVDs. Just don’t expect a huge return on investment.
- 📀 Record Stores - Yes, record stores still exist and yes they’re still buying stuff. They may have limits on what they’ll take (and what they’ll pay) but it’s a quick solution.
- 🧾 Donate - If you want a no-hassle option, donate your collection — you’ll still benefit. File your taxes using the itemized deduction method and get a break on your taxes, all while the non-profit can re-sell and help its mission.
🔥Bottom line: You’re selling your physical media for a reason and while people are buying, remember that probably won’t result in a huge windfall unless you’ve got something that’s highly sought after. But some money is better than no money and unused items taking up space in your home.
