The Government Is Funded...At Least For A While

Ah, the Congress! That bastion of responsibility and restraint, a most civilized and august body of public servants. The people elect them to do a job, and they always do it, without fail.

Except when they don’t. Like with budgeting and funding the government.

It hasn’t been that long since the last round of government shutdown madness, but here we are again with the next one. Let’s take a look at the merry-go-round.

Here are Five Fast Facts on the latest funding bills:

  1. 🤝 The Plan - Leaders in Congress made a deal to pass two short-term spending bills to keep the federal government rolling until March.
  1. 💡 The Idea - These continuing resolutions (CRs) are temporary bills designed only to keep the lights on until the normal annual budget bills can be passed for real.
  1. 💸 The Dollars - The cost for this little “temporary measure” is about $1.6 trillion. Chump change, right?
  1. 🗳️ The Votes - The House passed the CRs 314-108 and the Senate passed them 77-18. The bill is now with the President to sign. Hopefully someone reminds him before he has his ice cream break! 🍦
  1. 🤔 The Cave - Many Republicans consider this a failure to reduce spending. This is especially interesting given that the previous Republican Speaker was ousted a few months ago by doing pretty much the same thing. What will happen to the new guy? Time will tell…

🔥Bottom line: As usual, not everyone is happy about this. Democrats want more spending, Republicans want less spending. Sure, there’s no shutdown, but it’s just one more time when our elected leaders failed to do their actual Constitutionally-appointed job and pass real spending bills rather than temporary patches. The one thing they could all agree on was to get it done early and get out of town before the snowstorm hits. Heroes, they are. 🦸

Can we get some real leaders in Washington at some point before things actually implode? Given that these yahoos are now spending the tax money on our great grandchildren’s paychecks, we really should insist on more accountability, shouldn’t we?
