In the never-ending attempt to make returning to the office seem attractive, employers are trying out a new tactic: hot desking. Is it successful? Depends on who you ask.
Here’s Five Fast Facts on Hot Desking:
- 🔥 Hot…What? - Hot desking is an office setup where there are no assigned seats. You sit where you want, when you want, with who you want. It’s first-come, first served. And you can move throughout the day.
- 🤷 For Who Now? - Supporters say it’s perfect for hybrid workers. In other words, if you get bored at home, you can come in and work on site whenever and wherever you want. Come in and get depressed with everyone else!
- ✂️ Cost Cutting? - It’s also supposed to save on real estate costs, too, since you don’t have to pay for the same amount of working space. That one’s moot if your company owns the building.
- 🤬 Thanks I Hate It - It has its drawbacks. You can get stuck in the same desk or work area every day. Cliques take over. You can be forced to work in an uncomfortable area loaded with distractions. If your team needs to meet quickly, good luck finding a room on short notice.
- 🗺️ Where in the World? - Hot desking is supposed to encourage collaboration and communication. Unless you don’t know where your co-workers are camped out. Then you’re wasting time hunting for them.
🔥Bottom line: Sounds like chaos, doesn’t it? It is. Absolutely. It also seems like it’s the same as remote work, since you might have to message your co-workers to find them. You might as well stay home. But really, this is just another case of employers doing anything they can to get people back into the building.
