That’s Gonna Leave a Mark

Remember that time in elementary school when that kid projectile vomited during class and then got sent to the nurse for the rest of the day? If that happened now in Wisconsin that kid would be stuck in the classroom due to a critical shortage of school nurses.

Here’s Five Fast Facts About Wisconsin’s School Nurse Shortage:

  1. 🤕 Sickly - The President of the Wisconsin Association of School Nurses said that in some districts, there’s one nurse for every 4000 students. That kind of stress causes burnout, bigtime.
  2. 🩸 Spread Thin - One of the main reasons is that Wisconsin has a law that does not require a full-time nurse within each school building. In some cases, there’s only one nurse for an entire district. And you thought the wait at Urgent Care was bad.
  3. 🤢 Bad Math - Worse, trends suggest there will be a shortage of 20,000 nurses statewide by 2035 due to aging staff and burnout.
  4. 🤒 Lunch Money - To help fix the problem, the state’s Department of Health Services recently announced an $8.3M grant to help K-12 schools hire and retain nurses and health staff.
  5. 📅 24-Hour Virus - While the grant is a great place to start, it only covers one school year.

🔥Bottom line: Yes, when you were a kid you suffered CTE when you fell off the monkeybars into a tire fire full of angry badgers and used needles and razorblades and never went to the nurse. That wasn’t necessarily the same for other kids back then. Regardless, nurses are an important part of the school environment and a shortage isn’t good. Hopefully this grant can help stop the bleeding.
