Study: More Money for OH Public Schools = Good for the Economy

OK, now that we have your attention, analysts believe an increase in K-12 education would lead to significant benefits for the Ohio economy. 💰 Better funding not only helps kids read good, it also leads to a stronger workforce and a decrease in crime. Blue steel! 🕺

 

Here’s Five Fast Facts on boosting funds for OH public schools:

  1. 🏫 Sizing Up - Ohio spends $13,358 per student, per year, which ranks them 19th in the country. New York spends the most ($25,139 a year) and Idaho spends the least ($7,985).
  2. 🎒 Howdy, Neighbor - Ohio's per-student per-year spending is significantly behind neighboring Pennsylvania, which spends $16,864.
  1. 📈 A Record-Breaking Boost -  The Ohio budget for fiscal years 2024 and 2025 allocates a total of $12.97 billion for primary and secondary education. That's an 11.4% increase over the previous two years. This allocation for education is the highest in Ohio's history. 
  1. 💵 By the Numbers - Analysts say that if Ohio spent as much as PA on K-12 education, it would result in between $23 billion to $90 billion in economic benefits. Education spending is linked to an increase in test scores, high school graduation, and college attendance. It also leads to a decrease in government assistance costs, incarceration rates, and crime.
  2. 🎓 That New Grad Swag - According to a report, people who finish high school can expect to earn roughly $322,000 more throughout their lifetime compared to those who don't.
