Wisconsin State democrats have proposed a set of bills that are focused on climate change, called the Forward on Climate plan. The only problem is they’re in the minority and this isn’t the first time they’ve tried something like this.
Here’s Five Fast Facts on the Forward on Climate Plan:
- 🍃 Big 20 - The 20 bills focus on infrastructure and jobs with an emphasis on farmers and supporting low income groups that are disproportionately affected by hazardous weather conditions.
- 🌳 Atten-hut! - It also aims to create a “climate civilian corps” that would train workers in alternative energies. It would also require all road construction to include bike and pedestrian accommodations.
- 🚜 Farm Fresh - The plan focuses on farmers as well, offering grants to plant helpful vegetation and create bio-digesters that convert farm waste into bio-gas.
- 🏞️ Long Time Coming - The bills’ authors have been working on these since 2019 when Gov. Evers created a climate task force. It released a series of recommendations in 2020 that served as a foundation for the legislation.
- 🇺🇸What does this look like moving forward? - The bills will need support from the Republican majority in both the Assembly and Senate. Democrats hope they’ll get some cooperation since there’s a focus on farming but many of the goals remain unclear.
🔥Bottom line: These bills won’t likely get passed but it's interesting to consider how and why certain politicians want to impact Wisconsin. Would these bills pass if it wasn’t all about “climate change?” What else would it take for lawmakers (from either party) to go out of their way to think of creative ways to benefit our farms/industry?
