What’s the opposite of coffee?
Sneezy! 😂 Sorry, we couldn’t resist.
Speaking of coffee, Starbucks recently hit the news cycle with a demand about returning to the office that some employees may find just a bit too bitter. Is it much ado about nothing, or has the Seattle coffee giant pressed too hard?
Here are Five Fast Facts on Starbucks’ RTO demands:
- 👀 Just Do It - There’s actually no new change to the return-to-work policy, either for 5-day folks or for hybrid folks. The company has just been a bit slack on enforcement for a couple years…but in January that will change, and firings may result.
- ☕ Local Control - The new enforcement of the policies, and decisions about which days are in office will now be overseen by individual team leaders rather than by corporate. They’ve been mugged by accountability.
- 🏢 It’s A Culture Thing - Most companies insisting on in-person work say it’s because their company culture needs improvement, and Starbucks agrees it should be part of their daily grind going forward.
- ✈️ One Of You - The new CEO is also a hybrid worker, flying in to Seattle on a (company paid) private jet from his home in SoCal for his three days in person. It’s a tough job, but saving the company money is hard work, and he’s a regular bean, just like you.
- 📈 Slow Trend - The Seattle area used to have 200k office workers downtown every day, but is now only around 88k because of WFH policies. Employers like Amazon and Starbucks are bringing them back slowly again. Better latte than never!
🔥Bottom line: It remains to be seen how the employees will react to this demand. Will they perk up or is a storm brewing instead?
