“To infinity…and beyond!” The famous words of Buzz Lightyear really capture the romance and adventure of space exploration. The cool thing is that it’s not just in the imagination anymore. Right here in Washington State we will play a critical part of tomorrow’s space exploration…and it starts today!
Here are Five Fast Facts about space jobs in Washington State:
- 🚀 It’s Official - Yes, there’s an actual, official US Space Force! It’s the 6th branch of the US military. The first version of it was originally created in 1985, then shut down in 2002, then brought back again in 2019. Russia and China also have similar military branches. Fortunately, Buzz is on our side.
- 📈 Massive Job Growth - The space industry is bigger than just the official Space Force. The industry has doubled in size since 2018 and now provides over 13k jobs! There are over 1k open jobs right now in the Seattle area. If nothing else, having a “space job” has to be pretty sexy when chatting it up at the bar, right?
- 🌓 To The Moon - One great example of local companies in the space industry is Blue Origin in Kent, which was just selected to help design and build the next human landing system for upcoming moon missions, launching in 2024. Another is SpaceX, which is a busy bee in Redmond, building dozens of satellites each month. How else are we going to get 10,000 channels full of garbage TV broadcasting 24x7 all over the world?
- 💰 Big Impact Today - The space industry currently generates almost $5 billion in economic impact each year. That’s a lot of spacebucks!
- 💰💰💰 Bigger Impact Tomorrow - With the space race heating up due to huge demand in satellite broadband and communications, investment banks are projecting the value of the “space economy” at around $1 trillion by 2040! That might actually make a dent in our national debt!
🔥Bottom line: With loads of great jobs available right now and such massive growth projected over the next few years, this can only mean good things for Paychecks! It’s safe to say things are looking up, both figuratively and literally. (Sorry, couldn’t resist…)
