Snow Helps Michigan’s Paychecks

Michigan’s economy just got a frosty boost thanks to this winter’s snowstorm bonanza! All that snow brought in tourists who couldn’t wait to hit the slopes and fly over snowmobile trails, and local businesses cashed in on the chill. Even snowplow drivers made out like bandits!

Here are Five Fast Facts on how Michigan turned snowflakes into dollar bills:

  1. 🥶 Brrr! - It was an average of 12 degrees colder this year compared to last year, one of the warmest winters in recent memory.
  1. ☀️ Snow Drought - Last year’s winter was so warm that there wasn’t much snow, and a federal state of emergency was declared in 42 counties. Who ever heard of a disaster due to a lack of snow?
  1. ❄️ Bring On The Snow - There was a huge difference in snowfall on either side of the lake, with many locations on the East side getting double or triple the totals of the West side.
  1. 🗺️ Happy Trails - There are over 6,500 miles of snowmobile trails across the state, and they got over 100 inches more snow this year! There was more than a month of days with 3” or more on trails this year.
  1. 📈 Rev It Up - Snow-related businesses bring in around $3 billion annually in Michigan. Last year ski resorts lost $41 million dollars due to the warmer than normal winter and lack of snow. This year revenue was up 30-50%.

🔥Bottom line: In the end, Michigan proved that a snowy winter can be a financial goldmine. Who knew a blizzard could bring in the big bucks? If you’re in Michigan, probably YOU. But it’s still good to see, especially for our Paychecks!
