Prescriptions aren’t cheap and if you’re taking multiple medications, they can add up fast. Thankfully there are ways to get costs down while still getting the same quality medication (and level of care) you need.
Here’s Five Fast Facts On How to Save Money on Prescription Drugs:
- 💊 Go Generic - Generic medications do the exact same thing as their name-brand counterparts and in most cases they’re cheaper. Ask your doctor to switch to generic meds or see if there is a less expensive alternative.
- 🤒 Talk to the Manufacturer - Many (non-generic) drug manufacturers have some sort of patient assistance or savings program. There may be income or geographical requirements for eligibility. It’s also worth noting that while they may offer you substantial savings, you may still wind up paying more than you would for its generic counterpart.
- 🤮 Hit the Warehouse - Warehouse Clubs like Sam’s and Costco are legally required to allow non-members to use their pharmacy at the same rates as members. However, membership has its benefits, too. For example, Sam’s Club has a prescription savings program for its members.
- 🩺 Mail Order - Mail order pharmacies often give you a 90-day supply of medication for the price of one copay. Just make sure you’re covered and your physician sends them the prescription!
- 👩⚕️ Get Carded - There are quite a few prescription savings programs out there (like GoodRx or Blink Health) that will reduce the costs of your medication. The only catch is that you won’t be able to use your insurance and that will cause you to miss out on the money that would have been added to your deductible.
🔥Bottom line: Getting sick is expensive, but with a little legwork, you can find ways to bring the costs down to be a bit more manageable.
