There’s this one house on my block that brings in an entire team to dress up their landscaping every year. It has to cost a fortune. That’s not something everyone can afford. But with a bit of time and organization, there are cheaper ways to get a professional-looking yard!
Here’s Five Fast Facts About DIY Gardening:
- 💐 Choose a Theme - We’re not talking about recreating Alice’s Wonderland. A garden theme helps you determine everything from the shape to the plants to any accessories you might like to have. For example, you can put together a cutting garden which would include flowers that are perfect for bouquets.
- 🌺 Draw Up Plans - Before you plant and dig, draw up your design on paper or on one of several computer programs. You’ll have a better view of what’s going where and the ability to move things around before they’re in the ground. Trust me, digging up something you’ve already planted is the perfect way to start an argument that ends with you sleeping on the couch.
- 🪻 Add Some Hardscape - Hardscape elements include paving stones, retaining walls, Bigfoot statues and even a barbecue grill! Hardscape items are put in first, and then you plant around them. You’re not limited to buying items from the garden department — you can make your own.
- 🌳 Maturity - Contrary to what you’ve heard, size does matter, especially in the garden. You’ll want to take into consideration how large your plants can or will grow. All it takes is one gnarly root system to ruin your patio and break the bank.
- 🍃 Make it Functional - In addition to flowers and decorative plants, consider growing herbs. They’ll save you money and can be used all year. Use them fresh in the warmer months and dry them for use in the winter.
🔥Bottom line: Gardening is expensive, but you don’t need a landscaper to do the work for you. With a little planning, you can save money and still have one nice looking setup that will make your neighbor jealous.
