We’ve talked before about how AI is exploding and is primed to take a lot of people’s jobs. But the perception is often different from reality. So what do American workers think about AI when it comes to their jobs? A recent survey tells us.
Here are Five Fast Facts on the perception of AI taking jobs from people:
- ⌛ Where We’ve Come From - First, let’s start with a survey from 2017. It showed that almost 75% of Americans didn’t think their jobs could be replaced by AI at all. Robot overlords were just a Hollywood thing.
- 🔍 Where We Are Now - A survey from June of this year showed that a third of Americans are already using AI, and almost half are concerned their jobs may be replaced by it. Quite the shift in just a few years! Though to be fair, the world itself has seen a lot over the last few years…
- 🏭🩺 Job Types - Though many industries have concerns about the robot overlords taking over, industrial workers are the most likely to think so. Health care folks see themselves as the least at risk.
- ♀️ Demographic Differences - The survey also showed that women, Black, and Hispanic workers consider themselves at highest risk of replacement.
- 🧓 Wisdom Of The Ages - Baby Boomers aren’t particularly concerned about being replaced, but younger workers definitely are. Is familiarity with the tech an advantage in this case…or is ignorance bliss?
🔥Bottom line: To be clear, this survey just looked at what people thought about AI job replacements, not suggesting what is likely to happen. Still, it’s an interesting glimpse into the mind of the American worker, and could help shape policy and technology moving forward.
