Removing Barriers In Michigan

Lots of people want to help others, and society in general. But oftentimes it’s hard to know where to go or what to do. That’s where support organizations come in - they focus the efforts and resources of a lot of unassociated people into a clearly defined objective or path. That way they have a much bigger impact together than they ever could have on their own. But sometimes even those organizations need some help, too.

Here are Five Fast Facts on helping support organizations in Michigan:

  1. ❓ Who And How Much? - The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity is encouraging aid organizations to apply for their piece of a $14.6 million pie in grants to help remove barriers to employment. Yum, pie!
  1. 📝 The Details - The BRES (Barrier Removal and Employment Success) program will provide funding to organizations that help folks who face barriers from diversity, equity, and inclusion challenges, as well as Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed (ALICE) folks. It’s not a handout to those folks, but assistance to the organizations that help them.
  1. ⛪ Who Can Play? - Eligible organizations include community organizations, educational institutions, non-profits, and other established support service providers.
  1. 🍲🚙 What’s It For? - Award winners can use the funding for things like auto repairs, daycare, rent or utilities, food, and more. They just do what they do, but they get state money to do it.
  1. 👏 How It Fits - The BRES program fits nicely into Gov. Whitmer’s goal of helping 100k families out of poverty and into sustainable career paths in the next five years. It also helps reduce the major shortage of workers for the state.

🔥Bottom line: This seems like a great idea! Anything that helps people improve their own situations with better Paychecks and help the state in general at the same time is a great benefit. Leveraging existing organizations who are already plugged in and doing their thing seems like an excellent way to go about it, too.
