Raising the Roof on OH's Minimum Wage

Money doesn't grow on trees, but we sure wish it did! 🤑🌴

Maybe there's a wizard somewhere in a forest right now trying to figure it out. 🧙🏼‍♂️While we're waiting, there's a new push for a raise to Ohio's minimum wage. No wizardry involved, but there is a little bit of red tape. Let's look at the deets.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on Ohio's minimum wage:

  1. 📝 Sign It - Raise the Wage Ohio is leading the efforts. This week, the Ohio Ballot Board gave the group the OK to begin collecting signatures. They need 413,446 valid signatures for the proposed amendment to make the November 2024 ballot.
  1. 💰 Fatten My Wallet, Por Favor -  Ohio's current minimum wage is $10.10 per hour. Raise the Wage Ohio's proposal is to increase the minimum wage to $12.75 an hour beginning in 2025, and then to $15 an hour beginning in 2026
  1. 🍴 Tippin' Ain't Easy - The proposed amendment would also nix the rule that allows employers to pay tipped employees less than, but not less than half, of the minimum wage. Employers could pay $4 less than the minimum wage starting January 1st, 2025, then $3 less in 2026. This gradual decrease would continue until 2029, when tipped employees receive the minimum wage as their base pay. They can still earn tips as well.
  1. 🎭 Mixed Bag - The Head of the Ohio Restaurant Association isn't a fan. He doesn't think the amendment is necessary because cooks and servers already make well more than minimum wage when tips are included. Supporters of the amendment say the raise is way overdue. Servers can still collect tips without worrying about using them to subsidize poverty-level wages.
  1. 🔃 Highs and Lows - According to the latest stats, Washington, D.C. has the highest minimum wage at $16.50. Wyoming and Georgia are the lowest at $5.15.

🔥Bottom line: Chatter around minimum wage hikes always brings out arguments. Those in favor feel that hard working Americans deserve to earn a living wage and we need to raise things ASAP. However, many people aren't so sure raising the minimum wage is the magic solution they think it is (wizard puns). Raising the minimum wage could cause more companies to automate jobs and increase the cost of living
