One of the great things about January is that shiny New Year Feeling™ that anything is possible. Heck, you might even keep working out through February! 😉
But what about your job? Whether you're eyeing a new gig or just hoping to see a little extra cash in your paycheck, what's the outlook for 2025?
Here are Five Fast Facts on job and raise prospects for 2025:
- 😒 Overall Growth - Unemployment has been super low—but it's creeping up because hiring has slowed. And once you're out of a job, it's taking longer to find a new one. Almost every job category on Indeed saw fewer postings last year, meaning companies aren't exactly hiring in a frenzy. So, if you're thinking about switching, now's the time to polish that résumé!
- 😣 Buckle Up - Job seekers in some sectors are going to struggle in 2025 more than others. Construction and leisure/hospitality may get hit hard depending on the Trump administration’s immigrant policies, and college grads may struggle depending on their degrees. Government workers may find themselves looking at that rough private sector if Trump’s DOGE takes things seriously. Finance and Tech aren’t growing much at all, so the search for those jobs is likely to be a rock fight.
- 👍 Sittin’ Pretty - If you're in healthcare or skilled trades, congrats—you’re golden! These fields are booming, and with ongoing worker shortages, demand is only going up. If you're not already in these industries, it might be worth considering a pivot. Plumbers and nurses are basically superheroes these days.
- 💻 Work From Where - Work from home? In-office grind? Somewhere in between? The good news is, you’ve got options. Last year, nearly half of white-collar jobs had at least some remote work, up from 41% the year before. Companies are still figuring it out, so use this to your advantage when negotiating your next move.
- 💲 Show Me The Money - The silver lining to this raincloud is wages. The outlook here is pretty great - average hourly earnings were up 4% last November, which is still ahead of the inflation rate. This situation is expected to continue, though we don’t want to see wages go up so much that inflation gets triggered again.
🔥Bottom line: Whether this is good news or bad news probably depends on where you currently work. But hey, if knowledge is power, these nuggets give you more power than a nuclear reactor. Use the power wisely!
