The Port of Tacoma is about to get a major upgrade! A new federal grant will bring a lot of benefits to the area (and the whole state), so let’s see what’s up!
Here are Five Fast Facts on the Port of Tacoma grant money:
- 🚢 The Layout - The Northwest Seaport Alliance is currently the second largest port for exports and refrigerated products, and the biggest export port for apples (duh). Despite this, there’s still more demand than the port’s ability to move products! We have LOTS of apples (and other stuff, too) to move.
- 💰 The Big Bucks - The federal grant for $54 million will be used to expand the Husky Terminal and comes from the Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP), due in part to the efforts of Sen. Cantwell and Rep. Kilmer.
- ✖️2️⃣ Double The Ultra - Right now the port can only handle one ultra-large container ship at a time. The upgrade will reconfigure the port to allow two at a time, as well as improve the truck routes in and out of the terminal. This will allow for a lot more goods and produce to be shipped out to destinations around the world. Bring on the export dollars, baby!
- ✖️3️⃣ Triple The Chill - An additional 40 racks for refrigerated containers will be installed, which will triple the port’s current capacity for time-sensitive products like seafood. Grocery stores everywhere will thank us!
- 🥇 Coming Out On Top - Of the 41 grants given out by the PIDP, this is the single biggest award given to any state. Yeah, we rock!
🔥Bottom line: This is great news! It will add jobs for the construction of the expansion itself, as well as create new jobs for the bigger port’s operations going forward. It will also provide more capacity for shipping our state’s products to the rest of the world. Everyone wins!
