Pay Cuts: Better for Work-Life Balance, Bad for Retirement Savings

So you've had it up to here with your lame boss and crazy co-workers. 😤 You're sick of the draining commute and time spent away from family. 🚙😑 Taking a pay cut and scaling back to save your sanity seems like the right thing to do…right? 🤔

Well, yes and no. Sure, your mental health might improve more than a guest on Dr. Phil, but the reduction in pay could hurt your retirement plans. Let's dig into why. 👇

Here’s Five Fast Facts on pay cuts and retirement:

  1. 😎 Living My Best Life - According to a recent survey of 16,086 adults worldwide, 51% of Americans said they would take a 20% pay cut to make their quality of life a priority.
  1. 🧮 Add It All Up - Even if the pay cut fits into your budget, it's important to do the math to see how much you're missing out on. For example, if you earn $50,000 a year, a 20% pay cut would mean you'd make around $833 less per month. That works out to be around $10,000 per year, and $100,000 over ten years.
  1. 😰 Cash Crunch - If you're making less, it could mean you're also saving less for retirement. In a survey of 1,000 Americans between the ages of 60 and 65, a third of them said they're considering returning to work. Half of them said their fear of running out of money was their main reason.
  2. 💰 Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? - On average, Americans say they'll need $1.8 million to retire, but only 37% say they'd be able to hit that target.
  1. 🐷 A Little Goes a Long Way - Saving for retirement doesn't have to mean taking drastic measures. If you save just $60 a week for 40 years and put it into a retirement account with a 6-8% average return, you'll end up with a million bucks.

🔥Bottom line: Staying at a job you hate isn't always the best plan, but keep your future in mind before making any major decisions. Before cutting back on your hours, see if your employer can adjust your job duties to reduce stress. Better yet, fire up the ol' resume and look for a new job that better fits your lifestyle. A new remote job may mean spending more time with the fam and kicking that poopy commute to the curb!
