Fall's such a great season for sports. 🏈🍂 Football's back in full swing (GO BIRDS) and baseball's heading into the grand finale (GO PHILS). It's also a great time to chat about the money coming in to support sporting events in the Keystone state! 💰🏟️
The Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) just announced a truckload of grant money to help fund some exciting sporting events on PA's horizon. 💸⚽ Let's dive into the details.
Here’s Five Fast Facts about the new grants:
- 🥇 Yay Sports! - Through the DCED's Sports Marketing and Tourism program, Pennsylvania will receive $5 million in grants to support upcoming sporting events.
- 🏃 Athletic Aspirations - State College hosted an Ironman 70.3 Triathlon this past July and was awarded $70,000 in grants. There's also another one planned for the end of June in 2024. The funds helped offset marketing expenses, site fees, hospitality expenses, and more.
- ⛳ Fairway Funds - Attention PA golf fans: the 2025 US Men's Open is happening at the Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh. Grants totaling $1.2 million will be used by the US Golf Association (USGA) to host the event and pay for site fees. The same amount was also awarded to the USGA for the 2024 Women's Open, which will be held at the Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster.
- 🥅⚽ GOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLL - Perhaps the biggest kicker of all events (pun intended) is the 2026 World Cup, which will be held at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Philadelphia Soccer will put the $2.5 million in grants towards operational and safety costs for both the World Cup tournament and the accompanying Fan Fest.
- 🎉 Fan Frenzy - It's estimated that the 2026 World Cup will bring an influx of 450,000 people from around the world to PA. That's a lot of hot dog and jersey sales.
🔥Bottom line: Whether you have dreams of crushing the Ironman or you'd rather drink like John Daly in the party tents at the US Men's Open, these events will be a must-attend for those in PA…and around the world!
