When the pandemic forced a shift to working from home, many businesses panicked. They didn’t know if their employees would stay productive or even do the work at all. A large chunk of them turned to monitoring software and a surprising amount are still using it to this day.
Here’s Five Fast Facts on Remote Employee Monitoring:
- 🕵️ Interesting Fact - Close to 80% of businesses with remote workers use some kind of monitoring software.
- 📹 Radio Shack - There are a variety of different options. There are programs that record keystrokes, take regular screenshots, monitor calls or meetings, or even take full remote access of a worker’s system. More than a third of employers require their employees to be on a live monitored video feed.
- 😓 Denial - A not-so-surprising 97% of these employers believe the software has increased productivity and 85% of employers don’t believe remote workers are being productive. It should be noted that only 10% admit that they’re using the software to get people to come back into the office.
- 🍃 Peace Out - Of course it’s backfiring. Nearly 70% of bosses had employees quit because of the monitoring, with 35% of them having lost anywhere from six to 10 workers because of it. The same number of companies have also used data to fire workers they feel are unproductive.
- ⚖️ Is this even legal? - Yep. It’s no different than the monitoring they can and will do in the office.
🔥Bottom line: There’s a good chance your boss doesn’t trust you and that’s a sad state of affairs. The fact that they insist on (in the worst case scenario) actually filming what you do demonstrates they don’t know how folks like us actually remain productive or turn out good work.
