Costco has seen the enemy and it’s you. Yes, you!!! You AND your friends. That’s right, they know you’re sharing your membership card and they’re not happy about it.
Here’s Five Fast Facts about The Costco Crackdown:
- 💳 Fake ID - Since the pandemic hit, there’s been an increase of people sharing their Costco membership cards with friends or family members who may not have one of their own.
- ✅ Self Don’t Check-Out - It was mostly used after they installed self-checkout lines where it wasn’t necessary to show your ID to a human being.
- 📜 License and Registration - To crack down, Costco is having employees check membership cards BEFORE you make it to the checkout line. Fun police in full effect. They’ve also put up “Friendly Reminder” signs at the registers to make sure you know.
- 🤑 All Gains - The strangest part? They haven’t lost any revenue. In fact, it’s up, along with their increasing number of paid members. They’re basically doing this to be sticklers.
- 💰 Loss Leader - In all fairness, Costco makes money on their membership plans rather than any of the products they sell. So, they kinda need this to stay in business, right? (IDK, kinda sucks…)
🔥Bottom line: There’s no other way to put it: if you’re sharing a friend’s Costco membership card, you’re technically stealing from Costco. They got lax during the pandemic for a variety of obvious reasons, but now they’re sewing it all back up. If you want to shop, get a membership. They’re not that expensive.
