Love to hunt and fish in Ohio but hang your hat in another state? The cost of your next tag may give you some sticker shock. 🥴 The Ohio Division of Wildlife has plans to hike prices for out-of-staters. Talk about passing the buck!
Here’s Five Fast Facts on hunting fees in Ohio:
- 🏹 Buck Wild - Although the Ohio Division of Wildlife has a booming budget of $92.4 million this year, it may not be enough. Talks of tariffs, inflation still raging on, and supply chain issues have officials worried. In 2024, the division’s expenses came out to around $92.2 million, which is a little too close for comfort.
- 💰 Movin’ Millions - The plan? To boost revenue, the division has proposed price increases to non-resident license fees. Officials estimate the price hikes could bring in an added $4 million to $6 million per year.
- 📈 The Jump Off - How pricey will things get for out-of-staters? Annual fishing licenses could jump from $49 to $74. A single-day fishing license would go from $13 to $26. Want an either-sex deer permit? You’re looking at a 3x price hike from $74 to $210.
- 🦌 Oh Deer - People from all over flock to the Buckeye State to get their game on. In the most recent deer season, 8,000 non-resident licenses went to hunters from next-door-neighbor Pennsylvania. Michiganders snagged 5,200 licenses, West Virginians took 3,625, and New Yorkers purchased over 3,000.
- 🫖 Timeline Tea - The price increases still have to go through the Ohio General Assembly for approval before they become law. They’ll likely be a part of the biennial budget bill which is up for passage towards the end of June. If they pass, new prices become effective 90 days later, so you’re looking at late September.
🔥Bottom line: While we’re talking about hunting, looking for affordable, high-quality childcare for your kiddos is no small task. Paying for it is a tall order, too. In this article, we dive into how a lack of paid family leave impacts Ohio families.
