In real oil news, the Buckeye State came in HOT in 2023. 🔥 Check out these super stats on Ohio’s black gold…with a little gas thrown in for good measure!
Here’s Five Fast Facts on oil and natural gas in Ohio:
- 💽 Hit Record - In 2023, Ohio hit a state record in oil production. They produced 30 million barrels, which was a 35% jump from 2022. Before these new numbers, the prior high was 27.5 million barrels back in 2019.
- 🏭 County Bounty - Almost all of Ohio’s oil production happens within 15 counties. In 2023, Carroll and Guernsey counties produced roughly two-thirds of the state’s oil. Carroll produced 9.8 million barrels and Guernsey 9.3 million.
- 🛢️ Barrel Boosters - Experts say pandemic recovery provided a boost to Ohio’s oil production levels. People went back to their commutes to work and travel and manufacturing picked up again. Oil producers also invested in developing wells in Ohio’s Utica Shale back in 2021 and 2022.
- 🤠 Everything’s Bigger - Although 30 million oil barrels is impressive, Ohio’s only the 11th largest oil producing state in the nation. They’re nowhere near the oil titan of Texas which produced over 2 billion barrels in 2023.
- ♨️ Ooo, That Smell - Ohio’s the 10th biggest energy producer in the country and the nation’s 7th largest natural gas producer. Although natural gas production has been on a decline since 2019, levels have held steady at above 2 million thousand cubic feet per year.
