Ohio Just Passed a $2B Spending Bill

Hey, big spender! 🙋🏻‍♀️💰 The Buckeye State just passed a $2 billion bill that will fund tons of projects across Ohio. Everything from famous landmarks to roads and bridges is on the to-do list. Even some jails are getting a facelift. 🧖

Although the bill passed, not everyone's a happy camper. 😒 In fact, the bill is kind of controversial, depending on which side of the aisle you're on.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on Ohio's latest spending bill:

  1. 📝 To-Do List - Out of the $2B sum, $1.65B will be allocated across the state through bonds for public school buildings, higher education facilities, local jails, and local public infrastructure.
  1. 👛 A Little Somethin' Extra - The remaining $350M is a surplus from last year's state operating budget and will go towards various state-wide community projects.
  1. 🎸 Rockin' & Rollin' - What kinds of community projects? For example, in Cleveland, money will go towards building a pedestrian bridge to connect the downtown area to Lake Erie. The bill also includes $5M for renovations to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
  1. 🚶 Just Passing Through - House Bill 2 passed with a vote of 75 to 19. All of the 'no' votes came from Republicans.
  2. ⚖️ Yay and Nay - Supporters of the bill are excited about revitalizing Ohio, especially in rural areas that often get neglected. Those against the bill say one of their main gripes is that there was no public testimony prior to it passing. They also say there was no transparency in the projects that were ultimately chosen.

🔥Bottom line: Bills like this always come with a little bit of controversy, especially when billions of dollars are involved. Getting everyone to agree on how much spending is needed and where the funds go is kind of a pipe dream. Rome wasn't budgeted in a day, ya know. Speaking of budgets, did you blow yours?
