Real men know how to embrace their feminine side. 💅 Women love a man who’s in touch with his feelings. Just don’t cry too much, OK? We can’t have everyone sobbing at the same time over the latest Lindsay Lohan Christmas movie. 🤧🎄
More men than ever are pursuing careers in the nursing field. 🧑⚕️ We love to see it! And an added bonus: these jobs pay well over the average national salary.
Here’s Five Fast Facts on men and nursing jobs:
- 🩹 Hellooooo Nurse! - Since the early 2000s, the amount of male registered nurses has almost tripled. The number of male nurses went from 140,000 in 2000 to around 400,000 in 2023. Two decades ago, 9% of nurses were men. Today, that number has jumped to 14%.
- 🩺 A New Era - Why are men going after more female-dominated job fields? One reason could be the trend of manufacturing jobs going overseas or being replaced by automation. Men also come into professions like nursing after working in the military or as paramedics or firefighters where they’re exposed to the field.
- 💰 Big Payback - To become a registered nurse (or RN), you’ll need a specialized bachelor’s degree. School can be a drag, but the payoff is worth it. The average salary of a registered nurse is $95,000 compared to the overall national average salary of $65,000. If you go for your master’s degree, you can get an even better job, like a nurse anesthetist. The average salary for that gig is $214,000.
- ⏫ Goal-Getters - Data shows that men in nursing tend to pursue the higher-paying, higher-ed-required roles. Lower-paying jobs in the field are still female-dominated. Only 10% of certified nursing assistants are men. That role has an average annual salary of $38,000.
- 📈 Rise and Shine - Healthcare jobs have increased a ton since the pandemic. Since COVID, the number of healthcare workers rose by twice the pace of job growth overall. There are roughly two open positions for every unemployed person in the US within the healthcare and social-assistance sector (think: home-care aides).
🔥Bottom line: Another perk: some nurses, especially those in certain rural areas, might be able to get assistance with student debt, thanks to federal and state programs! While we’re talking about healthcare, what kind of changes could the new administration bring to Medicare and Medicaid? We break it all down here.
