That guy who sits two cubicles over will not shut up. Worse, the web developers seem to be running a comedy club because they’re laughing constantly. Yes, you should be worried, because all this noise could be hazardous to your health.
Here’s Five Fast Facts About Workplace Noise:
- 🏢 Quiet is Loud - Too much noise at work, even “safe noise” like buzzing lights, ringing phones, and quiet conversations can have a real impact on your health, specifically your nervous system.
- 🔊Say What? - Employee conversations can also cause damage in the form of loss of productivity. That’s because you’re either trying to overhear them or actively working to ignore them. Either way, it’s taking your focus off your work.
- 👷 Heavy Decibels - It’s not limited to offices. If you are working in an area with industrial noise, get some ear protection ASAP. It could be damaging more than just your hearing. Turns out 22 million workers are subjected to this risk.
- 🎧 Muffled - So what can you do? Headphones or earplugs are obvious solutions, but they’re not for everyone. If you can handle wearing them, you can get cheap earbuds from just about any retailer or you can go straight to the top and get some fancy noise-canceling headphones.
- 💻 Get Away - If it’s possible, find an open conference room or even a quiet corner where you can work for a short (or longer) amount of time.
🔥Bottom line: Turns out work is indeed hazardous to your health. Sadly, the noise is on you to fix, because we all know most employers aren’t going to want to make any kind of changes unless they’re forced. Don’t be afraid to take steps to protect yourself!
