New Stats: Women in Ohio Politics

When Beyonce asked who runs the world, we all joined her in screaming, "GIRLS!" 📣💃 However, we're kinda/sorta asking where the ladies are in politics. 🤔 When James Brown said "this is a man's world," he wasn't kidding. Thanks for joining in our battle of the sexes sing-along. 🎤

Some new stats dropped on Ohio's political gender gap and it looks like the ladies are lagging in both political office positions and influential donations. 🗳️

Here’s Five Fast Facts on female representation in Ohio politics:

  1. 💸 Chicks with Cash - In last year's Ohio general elections, women were responsible for 30% of the campaign donations. That's on track with the nationwide stats. In general statewide elections between 2019 and 2022, between 29% and 33% of donations were from women.
  1. 💋 Ladies Night - Ohio hit a record during the 2021-22 term when 31% of the state legislative seats were held by women. That's the most women in office since the state's legislative beginnings 220 years ago.
  1. 🌨️ It's Raining Men - All six statewide executive office positions, including Senate seats and a majority of Ohio Supreme Court seats, are held by men. This trend will likely carry on through next year as all four major Senate candidates are men.

  2. 🧮 The Math Ain't Mathin' - Nationwide, a little over 50% of the population is female, but only 29% of state legislators are women.

  3. 🎩 'Ello, Gov'na - At the governor level, eight out of the 28 governors who ran for re-election last year were women.

🔥Bottom line: So what do we do with this information? We can start by encouraging our girls to stay connected to both local and nationwide political happenings. Education is key and the more our daughters know about our country's political system, the more they may get inspired to make a difference. Speaking of educating our kids, a dual enrollment program could save big bucks on college tuition. Read more about it here!
