A small group of Columbus single moms is testing out a new assistance program in the form of monthly cash payments. 💵 Here’s the scoop!
Here’s Five Fast Facts on new monthly payments for single moms:
- 🤰🏻 Moolah for Moms - Under the new Ohio Mothers Trust initiative, single moms in Columbus with an income at or below 80% of the area media are eligible for monthly payments of $500. For a family of three, the income threshold would be $74,400.
- 💸 Pilot Pioneers - A total of 32 Ohio moms will receive the first round of payments. This program is the first ever unconditional guaranteed income initiative in the city’s history. If all goes well, the program could extend to more families across the local area.
- 👩👧👦 For the Kids - In Franklin County where Columbus is located, childhood poverty has a major impact on the local economy. In 2021, it resulted in an estimated $5.2 billion in lost economic activity. Crime, reduced earnings, and health and child welfare issues all played a part.
- 📊 Testing 1,2,3 - The first round of participants in Ohio Mothers Trust were chosen out of 600 Columbus-area applicants by a grassroots organization called Motherful. This first group will be surveyed to measure how the program impacts their lives.
- 💰 Making a Splash - The program is funded by the RISE Together Innovation Institute and UpTogether nonprofit organizations. Since 2020, UpTogether has provided over $210 million in assistance to more than 200,000 people across the country.
