In the words of the great philosopher Nelly, it’s getting hot in herre. 🥵 That’s right, he spelled it with an extra “r” because it’s REALLY hot. The more you know! 🌈
A new bill making its way through the Ohio legislature would give Ohio electric customers some sweet relief on their utility bill. Let’s take a look at the deets. 👇
Here’s Five Fast Facts about the energy rebate bill:
- 💸 Give and Take - Under House Bill (HB) 79, Ohio residents who use energy-efficient appliances would be eligible for rebates on their electric bill. However, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. If you want to take advantage, you’ll have to pay a monthly fee of up to $1.50. Businesses and farms could pay up to $7.50.
- 💡 Don’t Touch That Dial - HB 79 would also allow utility companies to run programs that lower demand at peak times, like those hot summer days. In addition to the energy-efficiency rebates, utility companies could also pay customers to allow them to take charge of their thermostats. They’d turn them up or down based on grid strain.
- 🙌 Everyone’s A Winner - Supporters say the bill would even help customers who don’t take advantage of the rebates. They’d save too, since the program would result in less electricity use. The less electricity we use, the more the cost goes down.
- 🦾 Comeback Energy - These programs were originally included in HB 6, which was canceled to pay for FirstEnergy’s nuclear plant bailout. HB 79 is bringing energy efficiency programs back to reduce energy demand and help the grid take it easy.
- 📬 You’ve Got Mail - If the bill gets passed and you don’t want any part of this rebate program, keep an eye on your mailbox. You’ll have two chances to opt out, but if you miss them, you’ll be locked in.
🔥Bottom line: Paying for rebates seems a little backwards, but hopefully forking over a few quarters will result in some big bucks savings! Looking to get out of town to beat the heat? Have a look at this article about vacationing on a budget.
