You landed that hot promotion, scored a bigger paycheck, and became a manager. Look at you go! 🤩 To think, just a few short years ago, you were living in mom’s basement playing Playstation and yelling at Gen A kids through your headset. 🎮 No cap, all rizz.
Becoming a new manager is a huge milestone with big responsibilities. If you feel like a deer in headlights, you’re not alone. Check out these tips to shine in your new gig. 👇
Here’s Five Fast Facts on becoming a first-time manager:
- 🐦 Wingin’ It - Didn’t graduate from the Derek Zoolander School for Managers Who Manage Good? Yeah, neither did…anyone else. In fact, the lack of manager training in the workplace could be a big reason why people don’t climb the ladder. According to research from Gallup, only 48% of managers say they have the skills needed to succeed in their job.
- 📝 Wish List - First things first: decide who you want to be as a manager. Do this by thinking back on all the great managers you had…and the not-so-great ones. Did you have a manager who always gave you great feedback? Work on doing the same. Remember that nightmare boss who punched a hole in his office wall? Yeah, don’t do that.
- 🪞 Man In the Mirror - Honesty is always the best policy and managers need a healthy dose of self-reflection. Don’t be afraid to admit you need training in certain areas and always aim to improve your skills. Find a mentor who’s been in your shoes and tap them for advice whenever you need it. Learn as much as you can from the people who report to you.
- 🫂 The Trust Tree - If you’re a control freak, watch out for micromanagement. When you keep too close an eye on people, they’ll feel like you don’t trust them, which hurts the relationship. Most people are hired because they have a track record of doing a great job. Don’t be afraid to take a step back and let them be the experts.
- 🫣 Blame Game - Another way to throw trust in the trashcan? Blaming other people for your problems. When things go wrong, look at processes before putting the blame on a team member. Take it as a learning opportunity and use mistakes as teachable lessons. As a manager, it’s your job to take accountability and make sure things run smoothly.
🔥Bottom line: Another tip? Don’t get too sloshed at those work happy hours. Save those tequila shots for girls' night. Are you a white collar job seeker? Finding that dream job in this crazy market is a tall order. Need a sanity check? Head to this article before you hit those job boards.
