More Minnesota Families With Children Were Homeless in 2023

Troubling data emerged this week that shows the number of Minnesota families experiencing homelessness grew in 2023.

Here’s Five Fast Facts About Homelessness in Minnesota:

  1. 🏡 Up is Bad - Data from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) shows that 8,393 people in Minnesota were homeless in 2023, a 6% increase over 2022.
  2. 👪 Family Ties - Worse, the Minnesota Interagency Council on Homelessness says that nearly half of that number were people in households with children, which is a group that saw a 27% increase over last year.
  3. ⛺ No Roof - To further examine the numbers, roughly 20% of homeless people are unsheltered, 60% are in emergency shelters, and the remaining 20% are in transitional housing.
  4. 🏚️ Struggles - Finally, 21% of the homeless in our state reported having a severe mental illness and 12% are struggling with substance abuse. Unsheltered people and significantly more likely to suffer from those issues.
  5. 🏡 You’re Out - Why the spike? Officials said the end of the eviction moratorium led to an increase in evictions which contributed to the homelessness numbers.

🔥Bottom line: There is no good way to spin this information. There’s also no quick fix. Minnesotans are suffering and that’s despite our record high unemployment and job numbers. Perhaps someone will find an answer soon.
