Governor Whitmer has been very busy lately going on several international trips to secure deals with foreign companies. The goal: bring jobs to Michigan.
But…will it work? We’ve got the details on the latest developments.
Here are Five Fast Facts on new jobs for Michigan:
- 🚙 European Engineering - A European company called Expleo will set up its very first North American research and development shop in Oakland County. Expleo makes electronics to support the automotive industry. This is expected to create almost 200 jobs. More nerds? Yes, we’ll take ‘em! They make cool stuff.
- 🏪 Small Businesses And Entrepreneurs - More good news!!! The Michigan Economic Development Corporation just gave the green light for several projects around the state that should create almost 600 jobs and bring in almost $70 million in outside investment. These projects are intended to boost small businesses. Sounds like a win all around!
- 📈 Business Expansions - Some other businesses are getting boosts around the state, too, for another 350 jobs and $25 million of investment to rural areas. The new jobs will land in Alma, Mendon, Plainfield Charter Township, and Portage. #rurallove
- 🤔 How Many Again…? - Not everyone has starry eyes about all these plans, though. Gov. Whitmer claims to have “secured” 35k jobs since she took office, but those numbers haven’t appeared on the state’s job data yet. It should also be noted that a lot of these automotive plants move toward better automation and technology at the expense of people’s jobs. Yes, but…math is hard…
- 🙃 Unfulfilled Promises? - We know that when it comes to promising jobs, politicians have a tendency to, well, let’s just say do their touchdown dance on the 5 yard line.
🔥Bottom line: Don’t get us wrong, we really do hope all these jobs become reality! There’s nothing better than seeing new jobs, business growth, and prosperity for Michiganders! But you know what they say: fool me once, shame on you…fool me twice…
